The 2007 Rhode Island Envirothon
The RI Envirothon was held on Thursday, May 17, 2007at Camp Yawgoog Scout
Reservation in Rockville, Rhode Island. Nine teams competed from five High
Schools: Coventry, Narragansett, North Kingstown, the Wheeler School and
Cumberland.

The students competed in five areas: Aquatics, Forestry, Soils, Wildlife, and
Alternative and Renewable Energy. Each team presented what they would do with
the land at the former Rocky Point site, using alternative energy sources.
The Envirothon is important because environmental concerns have never been more
prominent than they are now, as all sectors of society struggle to sustain
quality of life without harming the environment. However, there are no statewide
standards for environmental education. Environmental education is a
pre-requisite to being successful at solving our current environment challenges.
The Envirothon approaches this in a fun, comprehensive, year-round program that
prepares students to be good stewards of the environment regardless of what
career they pursue.
The winner team was the Wheeler School. They will advance to the Canon
Envirothon, Where students from across the U.S. and Canada compete. That will be
held in July in New York.
