USDA TO PROVIDE FEDERAL FUNDS TO PROTECT RHODE ISLAND’S WORKING FARMS
Project proposals will be accepted through April 27, 2007

Warwick, Rhode Island, March. 29, 2007—About $2.8 million is available to protect agricultural land in Rhode Island through the federal Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program (FRPP) in fiscal year 2007, said Roylene Rides at the Door, State Conservationist for U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service. “This program helps communities preserve open space, wildlife habitat and cultural resources,” said Rides at the Door. “This is an excellent way to keep prime farmland in agriculture and, at the same time, keep farming communities striving by relieving development pressures.”

NRCS is seeking proposals from local, state and federally recognized tribal governments and non-governmental organizations interested in working together to acquire conservation easements on farms. Proposals postmarked or received at the NRCS State Office, 60 Quaker Lane, Suite 46, Warwick, Rhode Island by the close of business Friday, April 27, 2007 will be ranked and considered for funding. Final project selections are expected to be announced in June. For more information on FRPP, please visit http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/frpp or call Michael Moorman at 401.822.8820.
