Grassland Reserve Program

The Grassland Reserve Program (GRP) is a voluntary program offering landowners the opportunity to protect, restore, and enhance grasslands on their property.  Section 2401 of the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 (Pub. L. 107-171) amended the Food Security Act of 1985 to authorize this program.  The Natural Resources Conservation Service, Farm Service Agency and Forest Service are coordinating implementation of GRP, which helps landowners restore and protect grassland, rangeland, pastureland, shrubland and certain other lands and provides assistance for rehabilitating grasslands. The program will conserve vulnerable grasslands from conversion to cropland or other uses and conserve valuable grasslands by helping maintain viable ranching operations.

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT USDA’s GRASSLANDS RESERVE PROGRAM?

  • If you currently own or manage hay and/or pasture land, you may be interested in the Grasslands Reserve Program (GRP).

  • GRP can be used to both restore and improve the condition of your grasslands, and purchase conservation easements.

  • If you have considered selling development rights to your farm and you manage some or all of your farmland as grass,

  • GRP will pay the full market value of your development rights.

  • Two easement options are available: 30 year easements and easements in perpetuity.

  • GRP also offers rental agreements for 10, 15, 20, or 30 years.

  • NRCS and FSA currently have $1,372,081 available this year.

  • You must apply by March 25th for your application to be funded this year.

  • GRP may not be available next year, so we urge you to consider this great opportunity and get your application in by March 25th!
