AMA

The Rhode Island Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will be accepting application for the Agricultural Management Assistance Program (AMA) until June 15, 2008. AMA provides cost share assistance to agricultural producers to voluntarily address issues such as fencing, water management, water quality, and erosion control by incorporating conservation into their farming operations.

In Rhode Island, the Agricultural Management Assistance Program is designed to address those items most likely to cause risk to a farmer’s long term viability, such as drought-related crop losses and the loss of livestock or crops to deer and other predators. Financial assistance is primarily available to help farmers defray the costs of installing new conservation irrigation systems, converting to conservation irrigation from sprinkler irrigation, drought risk minimization, and protection of crops or livestock from damage or predation caused by wildlife.

Example Projects

Predation from Wildlife

Predation from Wildlife A sheep farmer is experiencing losses or has the potential to experience losses from coyote predation. AMA will cost share electric fencing around pastures to prevent predation. NRCS conservation program rules do not allow cost share payments for fencing around the entire boundary of the property.

Drought Management: Crops & Livestock

A beginning organic farmer is attempting to irrigate with an inefficient or inadequate irrigation system. NRCS will cost share for installation of a permanent conservation irrigation system using trickle tubing or drip emitters. Additionally, if the water supply is inadequate, cost share could be provided for a drilled well.

Impacts from Wildlife

An agricultural operator is experiencing crop loss due to deer damage or an Alpaca operation is concerned about the potential for disease transmission from the native deer population. AMA will cost share on electric fencing to keep deer out of cropland or livestock areas.
